For sporty wear, the designer found the inspiration from fencing and introduced the sneakers and sneaker knee high boots featuring lasered leather upper and high flared thin sneaker rubber sole. It’s a neutral gender approach on these sneakers, as explained by the designer“The uniform of the female fencer is, with the exception of some special protections, the same as for a male fencer”.
A honeybee motif that featured on Dior menswear last decade, when it was designed by Hedi Slimane, was printed on the front elastic strap of low top sneakers.
Borrowing a menswear motif suggested the feminist message that went through the whole collection, which was printed loud and clear on a T-shirt too reading “We Should All Be Feminists”.
If the honeybee motif is an example of the references to “so many other talents who have worked here – Slimane, Galliano, Raf Simons, Gianfranco Ferre”, the kitten heel or flat pointy toe slingback pumps are much more the reference to Monsieur Dior’s early collections, the femininity represented by Dior throughout years.
This debut show of the new creative director at Dior was long anticipated. Maria Grazia Chiuri, after 17 years at Valentino, was appointed as creative director at Dior, making history as the first-ever female creative director in the prestigious fashion house’s 70-year history.
“I strive to be attentive and open to the world and to create fashion for the women of today,” Chiuri wrote in the show notes. “Fashion that corresponds to their changing needs, freed from the stereotypical categories of masculine/feminine.”
