Tips On Design Your Own Shoes
What are the names of shoe parts??
Most common parts for fashion shoes are heel, lining, upper, platform, midsole, insole and outersole. Please refer to the following picture to see the names of shoe parts.
I want to design my own fashion shoes which does not make my feet sweaty and smelly. How should I do that??
If the shoe materials are not breathable, it will cause the sweaty and smelly feet.
The synthetic materials such as PU (polyurethane) upper, PU lining and rubber outersoles are not breathable. Please avoid using synthetic materials on your shoe designs if you want to design a pair of shoes which does not make your feet sweaty and smelly.
The natural shoe materials such as leather upper, leather lining and leather outersole are breathable due to the pores on the natural skin. Such natural shoe materials would make your feet feel much more comfortable and breathable in comparison with the synthetic shoe materials.
I want to design my own good quality fashion shoes. What type of shoe material combinations should I avoid??
Please avoid the following materials if you want to design shoes in good quality:
- PU Upper: Polyurethane as shoe materials is not breathable and not durable. It is a type of low cost shoe material and often used on the shoes for low end market for the price reason.
- PU Lining: PU lining is the same as PU upper. It is not breathable and not durable, but just a low cost alternative for the low end shoe market. As PU lining is not breathable, we don’t recommend the material combination of leather upper and PU lining, because such combination will block the breathable function of leather upper and down grade the total shoe quality.
- Synthetic Soles: Avoid synthetic outersoles if you want to design quality shoes. Bad quality synthetic rubber soles can be smelly and easy to fall apart. High quality rubber outersole can be used on the winter boots since it is more slip-resistant than the leather outersole. But for high end dress shoes, the leather outersole is the Must-Have feature for its comfort and breathable function.
Are PU (polyurethane) shoe materials and rubber soles breathable??
No, PU materials and rubber outersoles are not breathable. Please choose natural materials such as leather if you want to design shoes which are breathable.
I want to design a pair of pump without toe cleavage exposing. Is it possible??
Yes, it is possible. Just specify your requirement when you order the pump and we will make it for you.
Can I create a signature outersole for my own shoe designs, such as red soles for Christian Louboutin??
Yes, definitely. Our leather outersoles are made in Italy and available in almost any color for bulk orders. Pick any color you like and use it as your signature outersole for all your future shoe designs.
I want to have bright blue outersole for my shoe design. Should I choose rubber outersole or leather outersole??
We would recommend leather outersole if the outersole color is quite important for your shoe design.
Our outersole colors are processed very differently between rubber sole and leather sole. For the leather sole, the color is painted. For the rubber sole, the color pigment is usually added during the production process.
Therefore the color on our leather sole is much brighter and vivid than the same color on our rubber sole. The color on rubber sole is quite dull and lack of accuracy in comparison with the leather sole.
Since bright color is not an option for rubber sole, we would recommend leather outersole if you want to use bright blue as your signature outersole.
What is the difference of leather lining and PU lining? How should I choose for my shoe design??
The advantages of authentic leather lining are durable, breathable (no smelly and sweaty feet), soft and more comfortable. The same advantages are also applicable for leather outersole & leather upper.
The disadvantages of authentic leather lining are expensive, more production waste due to its irregular shape.
Since authentic leather is natural skin from cow or sheep, it usually carries some defect spots such as scar. Therefore, to produce high quality shoes, in CHIKO Shoes factory, the authentic leather is always cut manually, not by machine. The craftsman can accurately define and avoid the defect spots when cutting the leather, while machine couldn’t.
The experienced shoe craftsmen not only can cut it fast but also can cut it well. Well tailored upper parts are the foundation of a pair of well made high quality shoes.
The shoes produced by CHIKO Shoes are truly 100% hand made by the most experienced shoe technicians.
I want to use a private print as lining for my shoe design. Is it possible??
Yes, it can be done. You can choose any lining color for your shoe design, or have the lining custom printed with your own private pattern or image at CHIKO Shoes.
What is the greyish edge on the upper with PU lining? Why the upper with leather lining doesn’t have it??
The greyish edge on the upper is the PU (synthetic) lining edge. Normally, the leather lining edges are painted to match the upper color tone while the PU (synthetic) lining edges are left untouched.
The shoes with PU (synthetic) lining is usually catering to the mid to low end market. To save production cost, the craftsmanship required for synthetic leather is less rigid than genuine leather, which is aiming at high end market. Therefore the leather lining edges are usually painted to match the upper color tone for its finer quality standard.
I have an image I want imprinted onto the vegan upper. Is that possible??
Yes, it can be done with our custom printing technology, although vegan upper shall be smooth leather surface, not suede. Please tick “custom print” when you place the order of prototype or bespoke.
