Just about the time when everyone got the memo that pointed toe shoes are the most popular, the trend setters start working on the next, to make sure your newly purchased pumps will be out of style soon (that’s how fashion makes money).

From a shoe designer point of view, as the heels are growing lower and chunkier in the past seasons, it’s no surprise to introduce a new toe box shape to match with it.

On the runway of Fall/Winter 2014-2015, several brands presented their shoes with square toes, including the big names like Gucci, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent and Valentino.

Christian Dior had their tiny square toe box painted in red. The shoes look almost like a pointed toe from distance. But without the tip of the point, the temptation of gearing it to the trend of square toe box is obvious.

Different from the subtleness on the runway of fashion week, the shoes from Christian Dior 2014 Spring Haute Couture are loud and clear about this square toe trend for women fashion shoes.

Admittedly, square toe box is more comfortable than pointed toes, since it leaves more space for your toes. Especially if you have wide feet, pointed toe shoes may feel like a torture.

However, shoes with pointed toes and thin stilettos are born with elegance and femininity, while designing a square toe box shoe may need more thoughts to get them modern and stylish.

On the runway of fall/winter 2014-2015 fashion week, top designers worked it out by tapering the square toe box on the height and the width, to keep it narrow and thin, some even slightly rounded. With proper length extension, it’s more like a new variation of pointed toe or round toe, instead of a rerun of old fashioned 80’s.

The best heel choice for square toe box is undoubtedly chunky heels. But when the square toe box is extended and tapered like on Balenciaga shoes, it also works with stilettos.

Valentino paired their square toe shoes with high chunky heels and it worked out fabulously.

Prada tapered the square toe box and matched it with a plastic high wedge.

Saint Laurent and Gucci rounded up the tapered square toe box for a better look with a very low box heel.

John Galliano added a metal decoration piece under the square toe box, along with a platform and a chunky heel.
