Fashion and luxury has long been related. To look polished, the expensive materials such as genuine leather, horsehair, suede or crocodile hide are often used to craft the fashion accessories like shoes or handbags. However, for spring 2018, there is a new trend of cheap and chic on the runway of top fashion labels.
Moschino is one of the pioneers of using paper for high fashion. After sending the models down the runway in a giant shopping bag for spring 2014 and presented “cardboard couture” for fall 2017, Moschino made it clear that cheap recyclable materials are not just for environment protection but also work for fashion designs. Soon other brands started follow suit with their own versions, mainly on accessories, which basically cultivated the clear shoe trend on the runway of spring 2018.

Chanel is among one of the brands adopted the concept. On the runway of spring 2018, Karl Lagerfeld refreshed classic Chanel silhouette of boots, handbags, gloves and hats with a modern trendy touch of thin clear plastic. Featuring capped toe, the thigh high boots were grounded with clear Lucite block heels. The loose fit pull on shaft crinkled naturally with a wide opening on top.

Models were wearing clear gloves adorned with jewelries around the wrist and carrying a plastic tote decorated with Chanel logo in crystals. The sharp contrast of cheap materials and luxurious elements delivered a fun message of what luxury fashion is about these days – doing what you want and appreciate little things, at least in the view of millennials shoppers.
