It’s like in the movie of “Zoolander 2”. The controversial role of an androgynous model named All, acted by Benedict Cumberbatch, was questioned as a male or female model and the answer is that “All” doesn’t fit into the binary perception of gender.
Gender free clothes or accessories have been in fashion for years. For spring 2017, Balenciaga introduces high heel boots for men. In Balenciaga men’s spring 2017 collection, the first-ever men’s runway show of the house, Demna Gvasalia, the creative director of Balenciaga, took it to the next level by introducing the high heel boots for men. “I wanted to push it,” said Demna Gvasalia. And he did, not only on the different silhouette for menswear and tailoring but also on the boots.
Made of leather or python print, the leather boots on the runway are different and exciting, featuring square toe, sturdy biker boots rubber sole and approx. 4 inch stacked block heels. The designer tapped into women’s footwear and cowboy boots for inspiration and drastically transformed the knee high or ankle boots into men’s footwear in an edgy urban silhouette.
Balenciaga high heel boots reminded us of recent women fashion trend of “from his closet“, only this time it’s “from her closet”. Unisex fashion trend is a hot topic. Some may interpret it into gender equality. From leather coats to sunglasses, now add Balenciaga boots to the total pile, the designers took a break from gendered clothing and presented something more functional and practical for today’s fashion audience.
It set a new direction of fashion, which can advocate for social changes. When men put on the high heel boots on the runway of Balenciaga, we see girls took them off and wear them as accessories like in recent Prada’s fashion show. Clothes are how we convey our identity to the world. For that reason, stay true to yourself.
